EXCO-461: Aesthetics of Late Capitalism

Instructor: James Bilhartz (he/him/his)

This course will analyze a variety of aesthetic responses (literary, visual, musical, etc.) to the contemporary exploitative economic situation known as “late stage capitalism,” which has dramatically affected artistic expression in the last few decades. This course will look at both semi-organized artistic movements, such as vaporwave and cyberpunk, and individual artistic works as a means of illuminating how human relationships to memory, the body, and the environment have been altered under the present regime of late capitalism.
